Help Shape Canada’s National Food Policy
September 15, 2017 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Maryam Monsef, Member of Parliament for Peterborough—Kawartha, invites you to join the conversation about A Food Policy for Canada.
This community consultation will be held at the Douro Community Centre on Friday, September 15, 2017, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Community members from all sectors, including food production, processing, distribution, and consumption, will come together to participate in an important conversation about how food affects you and your family. This event is being organized in cooperation with Peterborough Public Health.
A Food Policy for Canada will set a long-term vision for the health, environmental, social, and economic goals related to food, while identifying actions we can take in the short-term.
The Peterborough—Kawartha community is invited to share input at this town hall hosted by MP Maryam Monsef. Feedback gathered at this community consultation will be developed into a thorough report and delivered to the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. The report will also be made available on maryammonsef.ca.
“This consultation is a timely opportunity for residents to help shape Canada’s food policy at the federal level to help create the national solutions we need to address this issue,” says Dr. Rosana Salvaterra, Medical Officer of Health for Peterborough Public Health. “Healthy food is often sacrificed when other costs like housing are too expensive, especially for those living on social assistance or earning minimum wage. Research has shown how despite our best efforts to reduce local food insecurity, it still persists. In fact, Peterborough has one of the highest food insecurity rates in the country.”
“Despite best efforts to reduce and mitigate the effects of poverty, food insecurity persists here in Peterborough—Kawartha, and so we know that national solutions are needed. Peterborough—Kawartha has a long and strong tradition of food production and agricultural excellence, so I have every confidence that, in partnership with Peterborough Public Health and members of the local agri-food industry, we will be able to produce a thoughtful report to share with the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. Our community’s feedback is important, in part, because it is so multi-faceted in scope,” says Maryam Monsef, MP for Peterborough—Kawartha. “Let’s ensure our voices and our expertise shape the government’s decision.”
The decisions we make as individuals – and as a country – about food have a direct impact on our health, environment, economy, and communities.
Everyone is invited to attend. This venue is wheelchair accessible. Please communicate additional accessibility needs with registration.
